homework
The Good News:
* In Language Arts, you will only have 4 homework assignments this year! (Two research papers on a topic of your choice and 2 reading logs on fifth grade level books of your choice.)
The Not-So-Good News:
* They will take a lot of time to complete.
More Good News:
* You will have time to work on the projects in class (but you may still have to do some work outside of school).
* There are specific requirements, but you can choose your own research topics & reading log books. I will not choose them for you, so....
* PLEASE choose research topics and reading books that interest you! I want you to enjoy them and learn something.

- You will read an entire 5th grade, or higher, lexile book (600+lexile and at least 150 pages… no less or points will be deducted).
- Summarize and label every chapter. (To save paper, please put several chapters on a page and use the front & back of the paper.)
- Use loose notebook paper, not your 3-subject notebook.
- You will lose a point for each “dead word” used (happy, sad, mad, glad, mean, nice, good, etc.). BE SPECIFIC.
*You are encouraged to turn in Reading Logs early!! (5 extra points) Then you can begin your next assignment ahead of schedule.
Be sure to label at the top of each page where these parts of the plot begin AND tell the chapter number in the margin:
- INTRODUCTION- (Introduce all the characters & settings.)
- RISING ACTION- (What is the conflict? How do the characters deal with it? This will be most of your book & the longest part of your log... several pages.)
- CLIMAX- (How is the conflict solved?)
- FALLING ACTION- (Describe how things get back to normal after the climax.)
- RESOLUTION- (Tell how the story ends & the lesson the character learned.)

Homework policy for 5th grade:
- If an assignment is not complete, it counts as a "homework miss" and will be marked by your teacher (Denney, Docter, or Williams -- depending on which subject the homework is missing).
- EVEN IF THE ASSIGNMENT IS TURNED IN LATE, the homework miss stays -- it does not get taken away.
- Since you know the first week of school when all of your homework assignments for LA are due, there will be NO EXCUSES if you do not have your project finished on the due date. If you are sick the day it is due, you will be expected to turn it in the day you return or you will receive a homework miss. If you go out of town unexpectedly, the assignment is still due on our due date, or the next day you return after the due date.
- After 3 homework misses, a "Homework Alert" will be sent home to your parents to sign. This is a piece of paper that must be signed and returned the next day.
- After 6 homework misses, you will receive a demerit and will not be able to participate in the reward for the quarter.
- Demerits will be issued on the 9th, 12th, etc. (every 3 homework misses after the 6th).
Google Classroom: classroom.google.com
Soon, everyone will get their Google Classroom accounts. Parents are welcome to visit, but your child will have to log in order for you to explore:
Log in with: 2024firstlast@warriors.goshenlocalschools.org
Password: (most students' passwords start with 999 and students should know them)
This is something completely new for both students and myself. We will be trying out new things with Google Classroom later this year. Stay tuned!
